Why your site feels slow on a phone (and what actually fixes it)

It is rarely the thing people blame. Here is what to measure, in the order that matters, on the device your customers are holding.

Measure on the right machine

A new laptop on office wi-fi tells you nothing. Test on a mid-range phone on mobile data, because that is where most of your traffic is and it is where the difference between two seconds and six seconds lives.

What usually costs the most

In order: images nobody resized, a font stack that blocks the first paint, and a tag manager carrying six scripts somebody added in 2021 and never removed. The framework is almost never the problem, whatever the internet tells you.

What speed is actually worth

If you run ads, every second of load time is money already spent and lost — you paid for the click before the page arrived. On organic it is quieter: fewer people wait, and the ones who leave never tell you why.

The one thing to do first

Open your own site on your own phone, off wi-fi, and count. If it is over three seconds before you can read anything, start with the images — it is usually an afternoon and it is usually most of the gap.
