What we were handed
No site. The forecourt was the shop window and the phone was the enquiry form, so cars sold to people who already knew the yard or happened to drive past it. Stock lived in a folder of photos on a phone, and a customer after something the yard did not have that day had no way to ask except by turning up. Nothing here was broken. There was simply nothing for anybody to find.
What we argued about
They wanted price on application on every car, on the reasoning that a phone call is where a deal gets done. We said a listing without a price is the listing a buyer scrolls past the call never happens, so there is nothing to close. The compromise was a price on every car on the yard, and the enquiry form aimed at the cars that are not, which is the conversation actually worth having on the phone.
What we did
Built the forecourt as a catalogue: every car listed the day it lands, price on it, photographed on a phone in the office and run through a pipeline that crops and compresses, so a page of twenty cars still opens on mobile data. Each car is its own page, which gives a search for the exact make, model and year something to land on. Enquiries route to whoever is on the yard that day, and a car they do not have goes in as a request rather than a dead end.'
What changed
68% of enquiries now come from search, from people who have never driven past the yard. The site brings in 40 a month against none twelve months ago, and one in five is a request for a car that was not on the forecourt a month, each one a buyer saying what to source next. A car is listed within a day of landing, and the page opens in 1 second on a mid-range phone on mobile data.
